A year ago today I couldn’t have pictured my life the way it is now. All cheesiness aside, I mean it. If you had told me I would have seen the dazzling colors of the fall in Virginia from a mountaintop, cruised through Hong Kong Harbour at sunset, or biked through the tulip fields of Holland on a Spring afternoon, all in single year, I would never have believed you. More than that, I got to do all of those things with my very best friends by my side. That describes just three days of the ten-month journey that M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC) has been.
Thesis? Check. Final Business SIM Presentation? Check. Final M&A Exam? Check. Final Sustainability and CSR paper? Handed in.
Just like that, the inaugural class of the Dual Master’s in Global Commerce and Global Strategic Management graduated from ESADE’s Barcelona campus with two master’s degrees, a certificate, and a year’s worth of incredible memories in hand.
After a full ten months worth of researching, interviewing experts, gathering survey results, and holding focus groups, and writing- lots and lots of writing- it finally became time for the various M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC) teams to defend their theses at ESADE in front of a Board of Examiners of professors from each participating university.
Josep Franch is the Dean of ESADE Business School, and also a professor of MSGC’s Global Brand Management Strategies class at ESADE. We sat down with him to find out how this program came to be, and to learn what he thinks is most valuable about the MSGC degrees. The interview has been edited for length and clarity.
Stoan Stewart is originally from Goldsboro, North Carolina, and will never let anyone in the M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC) program forget about how great of a state North Carolina is. He graduated from North Carolina State University with a B.S. in Business Administration- Supply Chain/Operations and a B.A. in International Studies- Global Sustainability & Development.
In Barcelona, life outside of class is almost too fun. With endless attractions- Gaudí-designed buildings, the beach, FC Barcelona games, the Gothic Quarter, and all the shopping you could ever want (plus all the restaurants we constantly drool over) it sometimes proves too enticing to explore one of the most popular tourist destinations in the world, when we should probably be doing thesis work instead. M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC), why must you tempt us so?!
Andre Radomski is from Hamburg, Germany and is 26 years old. He graduated from the South Westphalia University of Applied Sciences with a degree in Business Administration before pursing the M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC) program.
SP: Why did you decide to do the MSGC?
As April came to an end, the M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC) students had the opportunity to travel to London and visit several leading companies in different industries. The two-day trip, organized by the career team at ESADE, mirrored the similar events that took place both in the US and China, completing a final overview for the students about opportunities and firms across the different countries and cultures.
Once again the M.S. in Global Commerce (MSGC) schedule gave students the perfect opportunity to explore the country they currently call home, Spain, and the surrounding areas with a break during the Holy Week leading up to Easter known as “Semana Santa.” In their typical fashion, students seized the opportunity to travel both domestically and abroad to see more of Europe after exploring countries all throughout Asia.
After completing five classes at UVA, five classes at Lingnan, and one intensive class at ESADE, we are settling in for five more. With perfect, 70s-and-sunny weather in Barcelona, it’s absolutely a challenge to not daydream of the beach the entire time we’re in class (just being honest!), but luckily, ESADE’s great professors and super interesting class topics help keep us in the moment every day.
