Now, a peek at each of our profiles:

Malcolm Brooks

Hometown: Pensacola, FL
Undergrad: Mississippi State University
Major: Food Science

Why did you choose UVA’s M.S. in Commerce Program?
My background in food science gave me advanced knowledge of complex systems, but I was looking for a way to apply those skills outside of the lab. The M.S. in Commerce was the perfect facilitator of my dynamic transition from the microscope to the telescope of business theory. I appreciated that the program’s graduates has a stellar track record (academically and financially), and the curriculum was immersive in a truly unique way.

What do you enjoy about the program so far?
Every day you’re challenged to strategically think on your feet and learn to see the world in an entirely new context. Of course, the brilliant professors, wildly talented peers, and promise of international exposure don’t hurt either.

What has surprised you about the program so far?
The course design emphasizes the connectedness that exists between subjects, even topics as divergent as storytelling and accounting. It’s like the business world is a gigantic tapestry in which every course is a linked thread. Oh, and recruiting starts really early.

Haley Hickey

Hometown: Vienna, VA
Undergrad: Duke University
Major: English and Public Policy

Why did you choose UVA’s M.S. in Commerce Program?
I was looking for a program that gave me a global perspective and business background to supplement my Public Policy and English majors from Duke. The M.S. in Commerce Program allowed me to do this in a mere ten months, leaving me well-prepared for a future career. As a long time Hoos fan, I was excited to wear the orange and blue myself as well!

What do you enjoy about the program so far?
I have certainly enjoyed the focus on group work, which has enabled me to learn equally from professors and fellow students. In the beginning of the program, I was a bit weary with the number of projects we had to complete with our groups. However, I think it is great preparation for the future workforce and allows each team member to highlight their strengths and learn from their weaknesses.

What has surprised you about the program so far?
The speed! We have completed nine weeks of the program, and have already had seven different classes, with another two starting up in the next week. There’s no doubt we are learning tons—drinking from the firehose, as many professors describe it. However, the classes largely complement one another, so it is fascinating to see my peers weaving together in their comments what we’ve learned in different classes.

Ryan Perry

Hometown: Louisville, KY
Undergrad: The College of William & Mary
Major: Government

Why did you choose UVA’s M.S. in Commerce Program?
I chose the M.S. in Commerce Program for the well-rounded business curriculum, built-in Global Immersion Experience, and only needing a year to complete it all! Furthermore, the program gears toward liberal arts majors like myself, which brings a really interesting diversity of thought.

What do you enjoy about the program so far?
I love the variety of classes and topics taught in an integrated way. Many of our professors have experience in their field, and the collaborative group work builds solid team skills. I also like that the curriculum is based on real-life examples through case studies.

What has surprised you about the program so far?
I am pleasantly surprised at the positive amount of interaction with my professors. The comradery of our class also comes as a pleasant surprise. Despite the natural competition, we work, strive, and suffer together, which creates a true sense of family.
