At Commerce Career Services (CCS), I work with a team dedicated to providing exemplary service to McIntire students and employers. While our offices are split into two teams, one focusing on Employer Relations and the other on Student Advising, we all work together to provide a range of programming that features both employers and alumni including mock interviews, industry panels, and information sessions. Though I serve as a point-person for the M.S. in Accounting (MSA) program, all advisors in our office meet with all students. As career advisors we enjoy getting to know all MSA students and learning about their unique interests and career goals. The added benefit for students is that you have multiple people looking at your resume or conducting your mock interviews– and the more people the better!
As an incoming MSA student, you have access to CCS services beginning the summer before you arrive on-Grounds. I have the pleasure of connecting with you in July to introduce myself and our office and, even though incoming students are located all over the world, we set up our initial appointments through phone and video conferencing. In addition to those introductory meetings, we also have a range of summer programming available. For example, last summer I moderated a live webinar featuring accounting alumni. It’s always great to hear their perspective and tips for current students, and see the questions coming in from viewers. The webinar was part of a series which featured a variety of industries and alumni speakers. For those who could not make the live webinar, they were recorded and are now available to all McIntire students to view when convenient.
Having those initial conversations before the start of the school year is especially helpful in planning for the flurry of recruiting activities that take place early in the fall semester. In addition to Commerce Career Day, our annual career fair which features around 100 employers across business sectors, we also have an Accounting Networking Night. This is a boutique career-fair and networking event focused exclusively on accounting. Last year the companies represented were: Baker Tily, CohnReznick, Deloitte, Dixon Hughes Goodman LLP, EY, Keiter, KPMG, McPhillps, Roberts & Deans, and Wall, Einhorn & Chernitzer. Whether through the fairs, information sessions, or coffee chats, you will have many opportunities to have valuable face-time with company representatives throughout the school year.
Regardless of where you are in the career exploration process, we welcome you to CCS to share your thoughts and strategies about your career. Do you have one or multiple offers? Let’s meet to weigh your options and discuss negotiation tips. Are you transitioning to accounting from a completely different field, such as biology? Let’s meet to discuss expanding your network and explore accounting career resources. My time at CCS has taught me that there isn’t just one type of Accounting student or career journey, and that’s what makes my job so interesting! I look forward to learning more about your journey and goals, and working with you during your time at McInitre.
