At the University of Virginia, we have our own way of talking. We figure that people outside our world might have trouble understanding our lingo so we came up with this little dictionary to help you out!
Academical Village: The Jeffersonian focal point of U.Va., an arrangement of residential and academic buildings, gardens, The Lawn and Rotunda (read more).
AFC: Aquatic and Fitness Center, one of several recreation facilities free to students featuring state-of-the-art cardiovascular training equipment, Olympic-size pool, sauna, group exercise rooms, “Poolside Cafe”, 3-court gymnasium, indoor walking/running track, and cycle room.
Cavaliers: U.Va. mascot and sports teams
CavLink: University of Virginia online job database
C-ville: Charlottesville, home of the Wahoos.
Commerce Career Day: Annual Career Fair organized by Commerce Career Services with over 90 companies (read more on their website).
Comm School: You’ll find we often abbreviate our words. Comm School is just the McIntire School of Commerce shortened.

The Corner: Fun hang out with restaurants, bars and stores adjacent to the university.
Dean Z: Carl Zeithaml, Dean of the McIntire School of Commerce, who invites the M.S. in Accounting class to his home at the start of the year for a cookout
Downtown Mall: Historic pedestrian mall less than a mile from the University featuring more than 120 shops and 30 restaurants. (read more)
Elevator speech: 60-second pitch about yourself to employers.
The Good Ole Song: Heard at football games after Cavalier scores, one of U.Va.’s football traditions. Be sure to memorize the lyrics beforehand.
Graduate Commerce Council (GCOM Council): Student Council elected by their peers responsible for planning social events and other activities outside of the classroom (see related blog post).
Grounds: Central campus
The Hill: The grassy area in the student section of Scott Stadium.
JPA: Jefferson Park Avenue, a popular place for students to find an apartment and within walking distance to the Comm School.
JPJ: John Paul Jones Arena, home to U.Va. basketball and music venue.
The Lawn: The grassy, terraced area in the middle of TJ’s Academical Village, also home of the Comm School and where graduation takes place.
IM: Intramural sports
MSA: Master of Science in Accounting (that’s us!)
MSC: Master of Science in Commerce (we share the Grad Lounge with them)
MSMIT: Master of Science in Management of Information Technology (these are working professionals who only come in once a month over a long weekend and then take over the Grad Lounge)
The Park: Park at U.Va. where outdoor Intramural sports are played.
The Range: Graduate housing in Jefferson’s historic Academical Village. We usually have a few M.S. in Accounting students who live there. (read more about The Range)
The Rotunda: The focal point of The Lawn. (read more)
Shenandoah Valley: Beautiful mountainside near Charlottesville.
Scott Stadium: Home of the U.Va.’s football team the Cavaliers.
TJ: The University’s founder Thomas Jefferson. We are on an initial-name basis with him at U.Va.
Wahoo: A person belonging to the University of Virginia.
